Amylin is a 37-residue peptide hormone secreted from pancreatic ?-cells that reduces food intake, decreases glucagon secretion, slows gastric emptying, and increases satiety.{35231} It binds to amylin receptors with IC50 values of 2 and 0.2 nM for porcine and guinea pig nucleus accumbens membrane preparations, respectively.{35235} Amylin is present in amyloid aggregates derived from the pancreatic islets of humans with type 2 diabetes.{35232} Amylin forms fibrils that react to thioflavin T and are organized in a cross-? arrangement of ?-strands similar to amyloid-? (1-40) (A?40; Item No. 21617) and amyloid-? (1-42) (A?42; Item No. 20574) fibrils.{35233},{35234} Aggregated amylin (60 ?M) decreases the viability of primary pancreatic islet cell cultures by 60%.
