The generation of ?-lactamases by bacteria affords resistance to several classes of ?-lactam antibiotics, including penicillins and cephalosporins.{25960} Nitrocefin is a chromogenic cephalosporin substrate commonly used to detect ?-lactamases in bacteria.{25959,25958,25957} The presence of ?-lactamase activity is indicated by the appearance of a red color that is proportional in intensity to the original concentration of nitrocefin.{25959}
