Deferiprone-d3 is intended for use as an internal standard for the quantification of deferiprone (Item No. 20387) by GC- or LC-MS. Deferiprone is an iron chelator that binds to iron in a 3:1 (ligand:iron) ratio and has antioxidant and neuroprotective activities.{42958} It reverses ferroptosis induced by erastin (Item No. 17754) in HT-1080 fibrosarcoma cells when used at a concentration of 100 µM as well as reduces levels of intracellular iron and inhibits lipid peroxidation in primary rat hepatocytes at 200 and 50 µM, respectively.{62293,42959} Deferiprone reduces cholesterol diet-induced increases in the levels of amyloid-? (1-42) (A?42), A?40, and the phosphorylation of tau and glycogen synthase kinase-3? (GSK-3?) in the rabbit hippocampus when administered at a dose of 50 mg/kg.{42960} Formulations containing deferiprone have been used in the treatment of thalassemia.
