Brevetoxin 3 is a neurotoxin produced by the dinoflagellate K. brevis.{62460,62461} It binds to site 5 of voltage-gated sodium channels (Navs), prolonging the mean open time and inhibiting inactivation of these channels.{62461} Brevetoxin 3 induces the release of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), L-glutamate, and L-aspartate from primary rat cerebellar granule neurons (CGNs; EC50s = 30.9, 45.3, and 50.2 nM, respectively).{62462} It induces convulsions in, and is lethal to (LD50 = 4 ng/egg), Japanese rice fish embryos.{62460} Brevetoxin 3 has been found in water samples collected during red tide blooms.{62463}
