Arginase-1 (ARG1) is a manganese-metalloenzyme that catalyzes the irreversible hydrolysis of L-arginine into urea and L-ornithine with roles in polyamine synthesis and tissue repair.{60137,60138,60140} It functions as a homotrimer with each subunit containing a binuclear manganese cluster at its active site.{60138} ARG1 is expressed primarily in the liver, and at lower levels in various extrahepatic tissues, including the heart, lung, intestine, and stomach, as well as the CNS, blood vessels, and M2 macrophages.{60137} Loss-of-function mutations in ARG1 are associated with the autosomal recessive disorder arginase-1 deficiency that is characterized by neurological impairment, growth retardation, spastic paraparesis, and hyperargininemia.{60138} ARG1 expression is increased in lung homogenates isolated from patients with asthma.{60139} Cayman’s ARG1 (human, recombinant) protein can be used for enzyme assay applications.
