C16 Sphingomyelin-d9 is intended for use as an internal standard for the quantification of C16 sphingomyelin (Item No. 10007946) by GC- or LC-MS. C16 Sphingomyelin is a naturally occurring sphingolipid.{37418,40751,37417} Levels of C16 sphingomyelin are elevated in the prefrontal cortex and cerebellum in a rat model of diabetes induced by streptozotocin (STZ; Item No. 13104), as well as in the liver in mouse models of Niemann-Pick type C1 disease.{37418,40751} Plasma levels of C16 sphingomyelin are decreased in patients with prostate cancer.{37417} Model membranes containing C16 sphingomyelin, 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-PC (POPC; Item No. 15102), and cholesterol (Item No. 9003100) have been used in the study of lipid raft dynamics and membrane organization.{48564,48565} C16 Sphingomyelin-d9 MaxSpec® standard is a quantitative grade standard of C16 sphingomyelin-d9 (d18:1/16:0-d9) (Item No. 27551) that has been prepared specifically for mass spectrometry and related applications where quantitative reproducibility is required. The solution has been prepared gravimetrically and is supplied in a deactivated glass ampule sealed under argon. The concentration was verified by comparison to an independently prepared calibration standard. This C16 sphingomyelin-d9 MaxSpec® standard is guaranteed to meet identity, purity, stability, and concentration specifications and is provided with a batch-specific certificate of analysis. Ongoing stability testing is performed to ensure the concentration remains accurate throughout the shelf life of the product. Note: The amount of solution added to the vial is in excess of the listed amount. Therefore, it is necessary to accurately measure volumes for preparation of calibration standards. Follow recommended storage and handling conditions to maintain product quality.
