Cefixime is a cephalosporin antibiotic.{28221} It is active against numerous Gram-negative bacteria, including clinical isolates of E. coli, K. pneumoniae, and P. mirabilis (MIC90s = 3.13, 0.2, and ?0.025 µg/ml, respectively), as well as clinical isolates of the Gram-positive bacteria S. pneumoniae and S. pyogenes (MIC90s = 0.2 and 0.39 µg/ml, respectively).{28223} Cefixime is resistant to hydrolysis by ?-lactamases isolated from several bacteria compared to cefaclor (Item No. 23626), cephalexin (Item No. 9002009), or cefradine (Item No. 26060).{28221} It increases survival in mice infected with E. coli, K. pneumoniae, or P. mirabilis (ED50s = 0.212, 0.132, and 0.349 mg/kg, respectively).{28223} Formulations containing cefixime have been used in the treatment of bacterial infections.
